Summer Emergency Medicine Fellowship for Underrepresented Minorities in Medicine
The UCSF Department of Emergency Medicine welcomes medical students interested in completing a 6-week summer fellowship in our emergency department. This fellowship is open to medical students who are underrepresented in medicine (URM) and have completed their 1st year in medical school.
The goal of this fellowship is to foster interest in the field of Emergency Medicine to URM students by providing individualized mentorship, hands-on clinical experience, research and academic opportunities. Our aim is to recruit students from diverse backgrounds and to provide them with clinical and research experience that will help them develop into advocates for social change. This fellowship is a pathway program that is committed to: increasing diversity in Emergency Medicine, helping to create a workforce that is representative of the populations we serve, and improving equitable care of historically underserved communities.
Eligibility
This fellowship is open to URM medical students enrolled in LCME accredited institutions who self-identify as being from disadvantaged backgrounds, have completed their first year of medical school, and have an interest in Emergency Medicine. Attention will be placed on (but not limited to) the following: low socioeconomic status, distance traveled to a career in medicine, and other lived experiences valuable to improving the care of historically disadvantaged populations locally and nationally.
Please note that program participation is a full-time commitment. In addition, you are required to be present in-person in San Francisco during the posted program dates. Applicants must be able to attend 90% of program sessions AND all mandatory sessions to be eligible for selection. Applicants will be expected to confirm with their home institutions that they will be able to commit to the posted program dates prior to applying. For reference, mandatory sessions will run Monday thru Friday 0900-1300 Pacific Time*.
Please disclose in your application if you already are participating in another funded Summer Mentorship or Research program. Preference will be given to students NOT participating in another funded Summer Research opportunity.
*Planned Social gatherings or other program events may be scheduled outside of these hours (these are infrequent and not considered manadatory)
Stipend
A $3500 stipend will be provided to all students*. Funding may be used for housing, travel/transportation, meeting registration, meeting travel, and research resources. Additional funding may be available on a case-by-case basis for reimbursement of research supplies (i.e. statistical software, etc).
